We understand that it can be hard to brainstorm ways to spruce up your staircase on your own. That’s why we’ve compiled a list of makeover ideas in one place. Updating your home can be a great way to increase property value and ultimately make your home feel new. There are dozens of ways to update the look of wooden stairs; some, can cost more than others which is why sometimes a DIY project is necessary.

1. Remove old carpet.

Whether you re-carpet the stairs, or refinish the wood underneath, removing old carpet is one simple way to achieve a quick makeover. We recommend not hiding the beautiful wood under the carpet if possible. Carpet tends to become outdated and dirty extremely fast. Instead, keep that carpet off and sand down the wood, add a stain, and you’re pretty much all done with this simple DIY. It’s a task that almost anyone can do no matter the skill level.

Another option if you don’t have wood under the carpet is to install stair treads and risers. This is an option to still update the space without breaking the bank. We recommend using oak wood, it’s easy to work with and can be stained light or dark, depending on the look you want in your home.

2. Rail posts, balusters, banisters

Change rail posts and balustrade or banister on your stairs. Professional help may be needed on this project; it doesn’t require a ton of skill but ensuring that your stairs remain properly installed is a safety feature you might not want to mess with. This change can be as easy as picking out a new railing or switching the posts to be a little different. Iron balusters are a great compliment to a wood tread. This can help you create a more modern space if that is what you’re going for.

3. Switch the staircase

One last option is to switch the actual staircase and chance the newel post. This project is a little extensive especially for those who are newer to house projects; but this idea can really change the entire look. One thing to keep in mind is to make sure your post matches the other banisters and posts to keep a cohesive look throughout.

We hope that after reading this blog you have an idea of what you want to do with your stairs! Good luck and if you need any help and you’re in the Louisville, Kentucky area, don’t hesitate to reach out for a professional hand.
