Minimalism VS Maximalism

Who would have thought that minimalism would slowly be waning away? Not us! Over the past two years, almost all of us have experienced more time at home than ever before. The events that happened in 2020 lead many homeowners to stay put and remain in the comfort of their own home. During this shift in routine, it has been recognized that an increased amount of time lead people to change the style of their homes. No longer going with the sophisticated-minimlism, but rather more eye-catching and comforting looks like maximalism.

What is maximalism?

Making your home cozier and more inviting is what maximalism aims to do. Maximalist designers avoid the stark look of minimalism and choose bolder designs in the form of paint, furniture, wallpaper, and other elements that make a space cozy. Connecting to your home in a way that brings joy and comfort can be done through hanging family pictures on the walls, painting a room your favorite color, and using lots of textiles like rugs, blankets, and pillows.

Why was minimalism so popular?

This design is meant to keep things blank and simple to help homeowners feel calm and peaceful. Those who follow minimalism usually follow the term “less is more.” With the ideas that a cluttered space can cause anxiety and stress, the goal is to have as little in your home as possible while still living a comfortable life. This can be seen with clean lines, nothing “extra,” and hanging on to only what you really need. Decor in this category can be neutral colors like white and ivory, slight pops of color with wall decor, and incorporating neutral tones through textiles.

Which is right for you?

Choosing which is right for you varies among everyone! If you tend to feel more calm and relaxed in a space that doesn’t have a lot of extra things and you enjoy neutral colors and clean lines, then minimalism is probably best for you. Or, if you enjoy lots of color and feel happy in an environment with different colors, little trinkets, and extra wall decor, you would probably lean more towards the maximalist style. Overall, you should choose a design and create an environment that you’re happy with. Want to do a little of both? Why not! Go for it and make your home something you love to come home to.
